Motorcycle seats are generally made from foam covered in one piece of thin stretchy vinyl. Since that material does not last long in our hot and dry Arizona climate, I often have customers come to the shop for a replacement of their original factory seat. Over time, their seat has simply worn out or become cracked with brittle tears in the material.
When it comes time to re-upholster a bike seat, the new cover is usually made out of 2-3 pieces of material sewn together to fit over the original foam. I use marine grade vinyl which is thicker and UV treated to withstand sun exposure. This material is more durable than the original vinyl and ensures that the seat will last longer. In doing so, the upholstery repair usually involves more time than a simple "wrap and staple job", but always exceeds my customer's expectations.
Since the new seat cover is already being designed from scratch, this is usually when customers ask for a custom look. A unique design is not much more expensive at this point in the upholstery process. Some customers have asked for:
exotic inserts such as alligator, ostrich or snake skin (real or synthetic)
a two toned custom seat or material to match the paint on their bike
an upgrade from vinyl to a premium leather
custom flames or a hand stitched design
While I am doing your motorcycle seat replacement, I can also shave your seat foam. Customers ask for this for two reasons. Either their seat is uncomfortable for long rides or they want the height reduced so their feet can firmly reach the ground. Once the top or sides of the foam are shaved down, the customer is more stable on the bike.
Below are a few examples of motorcycle seats I've stitched down at the shop.
